What CMS's public data shows about Rhode Island nursing homes since 2019, and how homes' ratings, staffing and inspections changed after they were sold.

At a glance

What happened when homes were sold

Rhode Island's Health Department reviews each change in a nursing home's effective control. This compares each home's ratings and staffing before and after such a change, using the last CMS rating before the sale as the starting point, and compares them with homes that were not sold over the same periods.

Each point is the average change from the last CMS rating before the sale (that rating is 0, at "Sale"). Points left of "Sale" show the lead-up.

Dates are the CMS takeover date where CMS lists one, otherwise the state's decision date. Stars are CMS overall ratings (5 is best).

Blank cells mean CMS data is not available for that period: the sale was before CMS data starts in April 2019, is too recent for a year to have passed, or the home left the CMS files.

Owner groups

Average CMS overall stars for the homes each group acquired: at the last rating before the sale, then one year later, two years later, and at the latest rating under that owner. Each comparison uses only homes that have reached that point, so recent purchases drop out of the one- and two-year columns; the count under each average says how many homes it covers.
